Colombian human rights vigil

Colombian human rights vigil

Katy with MPs and Trade Unionists outside the Colombian Embassy on Tuesday 20th March 2007 at a vigil to remember the 84 trade unionists who were assassinated in Colombia in 2006.

Katy took part in a delegation organised by Justice for Colombia [1] to Colombia in August which involved three Labour MPs including Tony Lloyd MP, the Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party and senior British trade unionists. Over 4,000 trade unionists have been murdered in Colombia in the last 20 years. The numbers murdered continue to rise and almost half of those killed are teachers. During her visit to Colombia Katy met with trade unionists, political prisoners, many of the families of those allededly killed by the Colombian authorities and also with the families of those held by the FARC guerillas. A number of meetings took place with the Colombian Police, Army, Secret Service and senior politicians including the Vice President of Colombia to make representations regarding the human rights issues in relation to Cololmbia and other countries. Any constituent who has an issue which they believe should be brought to Katy's attention should email her at clarkk@parliament.uk [2] or write to Katy's office.
