Local MP Katy Clark welcomed the new tax rates which came into force on Monday 6th April 2009.
It is believed that as many as 22 million people in Britain will benefit from the increase in the tax free personal allowance. The new rates include the income tax personal allowance rising by £440 a year to £6,475 and a £5 rise in the starting point to paying national insurance to £4,940 per year.
Katy said, “A substantial number of people will benefit from these new rates. Over 2 million in Scotland will reap the benefits of the increase in the tax free personal allowance.”
