MP WELCOMES OUTLAWING OF TIPS TO PAY MINIMUM WAGE

North Ayrshire and Arran MP Katy Clark has welcomed the news that as of October companies will no longer be allowed to use customers tips to pay the minimum wage.

Currently thousands of workers across Britain see tips, left by customers in good faith that the employee will receive the money on top of their wage, make a big contribution to their basic pay.

Katy said, “It is great news for workers in North Ayrshire and Arran who have suffered at the hands of this unfair practice. They will now receive a fairer deal.”

“Tips are a payment made by the customer to staff for the service they have received not a means for employers to avoid paying fair wages.”
