MP expresses concerns on Mobile Database

North Ayrshire and Arran MP Katy Clark has urged constituents to think about whether they want their mobile phone number available on the internet.

As of next week all UK mobile phone numbers will be available on the internet, and via phone, for as little as £1 and many are warning that it could lead to UK mobile phone users being swamped with unsolicited calls and messages.

The 118800 service has been criticised by many privacy campaigners since it was first announced in June.

Katy said, “I am concerned that this mobile phone directory is being launched allowing any user willing to pay £1 access to individuals private mobile phone number. The 118800 service claims to have 15 million mobile phone numbers in its database sourced from market researchers and online businesses. The only information the user needs to obtain your number is your name and location. Most people do not expect that their mobile number will be available in this way.”

Katy continued “I know many of my constituents will be worried about their details being so readily available on the internet and I would urge them to consider whether they want their number made ex-directory.”

There are two ways to remove your number from the database:

1/ Text the letter ‘E’ to 118800 from the mobile phone you want to be made ex-directory. Standard network charges apply.

2/ Go to the Homepage http://www.118800.co.uk [1] and the Ex-Directory link is along the top of the page

“I understand these services are currently suspended as too many people are using them and must say I am not impressed by the whole exercise. Surely something like this should be voluntary and your mobile phone operator should ask you if you want your number advertised in this way”.
