MP Backs Crackdown on Drug Driving

Local MP Katy Clark has welcomed the first national tv advertising campaign to tackle drug driving.

The new advert highlights that police can, and will, detect those driving whilst under the influence of drugs. Those caught will face the same hard hitting penalties as drink drivers.

Katy said, "Alot of work has gone into raising awareness of the consequences caused by drink driving and over the last few decades you can chart a change in the way people view drink driving. It is no longer socially acceptable."

"The same now needs to be done to tackle drug driving. One in ten young male drivers have admitted driving under the influence of drugs, many of whom wouldn’t dare drive after drinking. It is not safe to drive under the influence of drugs than it is under the influence of alcohol. It endangers the lives of the driver, passengers and other motorists. Hopefully this TV campaign will be the start in changing people’s minds on drug driving."
