Katy Clark MP has welcomed the Governments announcements which it is hoped will see nearly 3000 jobs created for youngsters in Scotland not in education, employment or training in a bid to lift group most affected by the recession.
Government ministers have announced £5bn extra investment to get youngsters into work including the Future Jobs Fund which will create 47,000 new jobs (rising to 150,000 over time) for youngsters and the long term unemployed and funding for 20,000 internships would be made available with half of them being made for 18-21 year olds who haven’t went to University.
Katy said, “Numerous studies and surveys have shown that youngsters have suffered more than any other age group from this recession similar to the situation that evolved in the 80’s and 90’s. Back then that generation were abandoned and lost to long term unemployment.”
“I am delighted that this Labour Government will not let history repeat itself. The Future Jobs Fund is a billion pound fund aimed at creating jobs for young people, jobs that otherwise wouldn’t exist. Already local authority’s, businesses, charities and voluntary organisations have successfully applied to the fund and there is still funding available for another 100,000 jobs to be created. I will be fighting at Westminster for more to be done to help young people seeking employment.”
“I would urge all employers in North Ayrshire and Arran to apply to the fund. We already know that the area suffers from high unemployment. It is important that our youngsters are given every opportunity in the world of work. Back in the 80’s and 90’s the Conservatives failed policies left a generation unemployed and we cannot allow that to happen again. “
