North Ayrshire and Arran MP has written to the Scottish Government Reporter dealing with Vodafones appeal against the rejected Phone Mast at Stanley Road, Ardrossan to express her support for the local community’s opposition to the proposal .
As expected Vodafone have decided to appeal against the decision of North Ayrshire Council's planning committee to reject the proposed phone mast.
Katy said, "Earlier this year a strong campaign ended with North Ayrshire Council's planning committee rightly rejecting Vodafone's proposals to site a mobile phone mast in close proximity of Stanley Primary School and James MacFarlane School. I believe everybody involved in that campaign expected Vodafone to appeal the decision and that has happened."
"I note that the Scottish Government reporter assigned to Vodafone's appeal has been in the town to visit the site and I am sure he will have noticed the strong community feeling against Vodafone's proposals. I have written to him voicing my objection to Vodafone's proposals on the grounds of no conclusive evidence exists which suggests that there are no health risks attached to the radiation generated from telecommunication phone masts and therefore the “ precautionary principle” should be adopted. I have also made clear the extent of local opposition which should be taken into account."
"The reporter will have to make a recommendation to Scottish Ministers on whether the appeal should be successful. Ultimately the decision will lie with those Ministers but I hope that in the first instance the reporter looks at the obvious risks associated with a phone mast in such close proximity to two schools and recommends that the proposals be rejected and secondly that Scottish Ministers see sense and deliver the final nail to Vodafone's proposals."
